U-shape electromagnet is the most well known and widely used electromagnet in different industries. It is used to lift scrap metals in metal recycling facilities and it is used to lock and unlock the magnetic door locks. The strength of a u-shape electromagnet is mainly due to the opposite magnetic poles that are placed side by side. In this way the objects are lifted both the north pole and the south pole of the same magnet.

You can make an electromagnet or you can buy an electromagnet and modify it based on your own ideas and needs. In the core of each electromagnet is a U-shape soft iron rod. Each arm of the soft iron rod is covered with a coil of insulated copper wire.

Small Electromagnet

The core of this small educational electromagnet is a soft iron rod with a diameter of 8 millimeters and bent to form a U shape.  Think of it as a model of lifting magnet used in industry, such as scrap metal lifter. Consists of two plastic bobbins wound with enameled copper wire and mounted on each arm of a soft iron U-core. Each of the bobbins is fitted with two 5/32" (4mm) socket binding posts.

Educational electromagnet

Large Electromagnet

Large Electromagnet, Dissectible , Deluxe. Designed to demonstrate the basic operation of simple electromagnets. Used in teaching the principles of electricity and electromagnets, allowing hands on activity for students to better understand these concepts.
Comprises of two coils, U-shape iron core and an armature. On outmost layer of the coils are several turns of plastic coated wires, indicating the winding direction of the coil. Each of the coils has two terminals which can be connected in series or in parallel. 

Large U-shape educational electromagnet

When used on 4-6 volt, 1 Amps in parallel the armature can bear a load of more than 40 N.
