Visible light is a specific range of
electromagnetic waves with wave lengths of 390 to 700 nanometers. In terms of
frequency, this corresponds to a band in the vicinity of 430770 THz.
| Red color has the lowest frequency
(between 430 and 480 THz). As the frequency of the light wave increases
it gradually becomes orange, green, yellow and finally blue that has a
frequency of 610 THz up to 670 THz. |
 |
The frequencies above 670 THz are purple
(Violet) and gradually (when the frequency exceeds 750 THz) it becomes invisible
(called ultra-violet).
|
The sunlight and most white lights contain a wide spectrum of visible
lights. You can use a prism to break the white light to its components
and see the entire color spectrum.
Color filters allow a narrow part of the color spectrum to pass thru.
For example one color filter allows the passing of blue light (frequency
of 610 THz - 670 THz). |
 |
Each color (or each visible light frequency)
has specific chemical and physical properties. That is why filters are used to
block certain colors and pass other colors.
For example red light does not affect the
photography films and papers. Red lights are used in photography laboratories
(known as Dark Rooms) to provide some visibility without damaging the
photography films and papers. The violet color on the other hand is a high
energy light that can quickly damage the exposed films and photography papers.
Violet color and the invisible ultra violet color can cause discoloration,
decomposition and other chemical changes.
