Platinum is a very expensive metal with many scientific applications due to its resistance to oxidation and most acids.

In order to make the platinum electrodes affordable to students and educators, they are made in the form of a long glass rod with exposed platinum metal on the tip of the rod. The rest of the conductor which is mainly inside the glass rod is made of a specific copper alloy. Part of the conductor is also exposed for making electrical connection with your power source. Such connection is often made using an alligator clips.

Platinum electrodes for Hoffman apparatus are equipped with rubber stoppers that help a water tight connection. Rubber stoppers may need to be replaced if they loose their elasticity.
